Have you been thinking about adding some greenery to your apartment decor? Succulents make great indoor plants because they thrive on indirect sunlight. They also store water in their fat, fleshy leaves, making them drought-resistant and incredibly easy to care for. Use this guide to select, plant, and care for succulents, even if you have never tried growing anything before.

Best Succulents for Apartment Living

Here are four types of succulent plants perfectly suited for apartment life:

  • Mini cactus: The spiny cactus is an eye-catching conversation starter for your apartment. Choose from numerous miniature-sized species.
  • Aloe vera: The long, thin leaves of the ale vera plant create visual interest in your succulent garden. You can even cut into the leaves to access the soothing gel inside if you get sunburned!
  • Paddle plant: This unusual-looking succulent has flat, round leaves resembling paddles. You’ll enjoy the bold color and texture it offers.
  • Jade plant: For the hardiness of succulents with a more traditional houseplant look, try the jade plant. Also known as a lucky plant or money tree, jade has fleshy, teardrop-shaped leaves and small pink or white flowers.

How to Plant Succulents

Unless you buy pre-potted succulents, you’ll need to plant them yourself. Simply follow these steps.

Gather Your Supplies

Make sure you have everything you need before you begin. Here’s what to put on your shopping list:

  • Terrarium or shallow planter
  • Gardening gloves
  • Decorative rocks
  • Cactus potting soil
  • Enough succulents to fill your planter
  • Scissors
  • Small trowel
  • Decorative accents

Plant Your Succulents

  1. Set up a planting station on your patio and put on gardening gloves.
  2. Line the bottom of a planter with a layer of small rocks to help with drainage.
  3. Fill the planter with soil.
  4. Dig little wells into the soil using a trowel.
  5. Cut into the plastic packaging around one of your succulents and pull it free. Gently tease the roots to help the plant adapt to its new home.
  6. Place the succulent in one of the wells you dug, ensuring the entire root base is covered.
  7. Repeat steps 6 and 7 until all your succulents are planted. Add or remove soil from the planter as needed.
  8. Cover the soil with any decorative rocks, moss, figurines, or accents you’re using.
  9. Lightly water the soil. Repeat this step every one to two weeks. Deep, infrequent watering is better than shallow, frequent watering.
  10. Place the planter near a south- or west-facing window where it will receive at least six hours of indirect sunlight per day.
