Finding a Roommate in Dallas or Fort Worth
Roommates.
We either love them or hate them – and we’ve all got stories (probably both good and bad) about past situations and experiences on the roommate front.
And while you may be thinking that you left your roommate days behind you back in college, you might want to think again.
Because having a roommate in Dallas or Fort Worth can be a great solution to rising rent prices in the DFW area.
Is Finding a Roommate Your Solution?
Let’s face it.
Rent can be really expensive, and prices are rising in DFW as more and more people move to the area. And while renting a one bedroom or even a studio may fit into your budget, sometimes it’s just not enough.
What then?
Enter the roommate.
If a one-bedroom or studio seems a bit pricey, why not consider bumping up to a two-bedroom and splitting the cost with a roommate?
In most cases, you’d end up spending less per month when splitting the total cost, and you’d end up with a bigger apartment for the both of you.
Plus, living with a roommate can be really fun! Of course, it’s nice to have alone time too, but if you set solid boundaries from the beginning, living with a roommate can really be a great experience.
Tips for Living with a Roommate
If you’re considering living with a roommate, take a look through our favorite tips below or making the situation work out well for everyone – enjoy!
1. Figure Out the Chores Situation
No one likes to live in a messy house. And if you do, it’s likely that your roommate probably won’t appreciate your messy habits.
Be considerate and tidy up after yourself, but also be flexible with chores. Talk about who will do what each week and get a chores schedule set up so you can avoid potential problems before they arise.
2. Learn How to Communicate Well
Speaking of talking, it’s important that you learn how to communicate with your roommate and keep those lines of communication open.
Not only is this a great life skill to have in general, but by being open and honest and communicating with your roommate, you’ll avoid a lot of strife in the long run.
3. Keep Tabs on Each Other
You don’t have to answer to your roommate, obviously, but it’s always a good idea to let them know what you’re up to.
If you’re going to be out of town or even coming home late, be sure to let your roommate know so they aren’t worried or think that you are lost somewhere. Just a common courtesy!
4. Respect Each Other’s Space
It can be hard to find alone time when you live with someone because that other person is always around. In order for you both to get quiet alone time in – and keep your sanity – get comfortable being together in silence.
Just because you both live in the same apartment doesn’t mean you have to do everything together or talk all the time. Respect each other’s space and learn to appreciate silence.
5. Decide What You Will Share
Some people love to share their food, clothes, movies, music, etc. with those around them, while others prefer to keep their things separate.
Make a point to be clear about this from the get-go, and you’ll end up avoiding a lot of arguments later on. And if your roommate prefers that you don’t share their food, then be sure to respect their wishes!
6. Be Kind to Each Other
We’re all only human, and that means that at some point or another we will all mess up. Don’t be too hard on your roommate if they forget to do the dishes one night or leave a mess in the living room.
Maybe they just had a bad day and need a little extra grace. Make a point to be kind to each other first and foremost – after all, you do have to live with each other.
